Uta~kata - Episode 2

Again, watching this episode was like a recap for me. I’ve seen further ahead, but I haven’t actually seen the end so if I do speculate in here, then you can assume that it is pure speculation, not that I’m saying things with prior knowledge of the series.

Compared to the first episode, episode 2 is quite a bit weaker. It is very much about setting up the mood for the series as well as giving us a bit of speculation material. While Ichika is obviously the main character, this episode focuses a lot on her twin tutors, Kai and Sei.

The episode begins with Ichika waking Manatsu up at 6 am so that they can go together to do ‘radio gymnastics’ which appears to be some kind of morning exercise routine done at their school. Everyone else doing it appears to be a lot younger than her, so I guess that it’s not something that a girl her age would normally do.

While Ichika is there, she meets up with a girl she knows (it’s not actually said, but I got the impression she was a schoolmate) Maki. Maki has a boyfriend, Ryou, who Manatsu instantly takes a disliking to. Ryou pressures Ichika into giving him her email address so that he can contact her on her phone.

We are introduced to the strange woman who was wandering about being cryptic in episode 1. Ichika recognises her as Saya, and she just happens to be Ichika’s neighbour. Kai and Sei come over later on that morning. They are Ichika’s tutors. They come to her house to help her with her schoolwork, basically. Ichika reveals how Sei gave her the pendant. This is an important scene, because it makes it pretty obvious that a similar experience heppened to the boys six years before. They were trying to get rid of the pendant when Ichika happened upon them, and Sei gave it to her rather than discarding it. They obviously assumed that nothing like that could ever happen again.

Sei and Kai are a curiousity actually. They are very much opposite in personality. Sei is quiet and patient, where Kai is confident and quick. Where Sei appears to be an intellectual sort, Kai is more of an athletic type. Contrast this to Ichika and Manatsu, and you’ll notice that they two have this diametrically opposed personality. Now, Ichika met Manatsu via a magical mirror, and this combined with the strange dream at the very start of the series leads me to believe that Manatsu is another part of Ichika, a repressed part of her own personality. I speculate that Sei is to Kai what Manatsu is to Ichika.

Ichika avoids showing the talisman to the boys, even telling Manatsu to keep it a secret, because she feels that the fact that the Djinn’s powers have ‘charged it up’ indicates she hasn’t been taking care of it like she said she would. She announces that she intends to study at the library.

Sei and Kai later have a talk, reinforcing my above speculations. Meanwhile, at the library, Ryou sends Ichika an email on her cellphone, asking her to go do something with him. She looks at it, but doesn’t reply, slipping the phone into her pocket. He appears a few minutes later and complains that it was rude not to reply. Ichika seems not to be able to decide what to make of the guy, especially since he’s a friend’s boyfriend, but Manatsu makes it no secret she dislikes him. Personally I agree with Manatsu, the guy is a creep. Anyway, they go and talk for a bit, during the conversation Ichika notices that dispite the fact she hates lying and people who lie, she’s been doing it herself a lot since Manatsu’s ‘arrival’. During this, there is a brief shot of Saya, who intones “from a single white lie, a wild fantasy is born” which is quite true. Lies have the habit of getting bigger and bigger the longer you stick to them.

Ichika makes as if to go home, but Ryou stops her. “You’re not going home. I have something I want from you.” Now, being 14 year old schoolgirls in Japan, there can only be one thing that that could possibly mean. :P The girls run, and Ryou persues them up into the mountains. As they run, one of Maki’s friends spots them and calls Maki. Meanwhile, the girls have run up into an extremely secluded spot when Ryou finally catches up. Grabbing Ichika’s sleeve causes one of her buttons to pop off, which in turn causes her dress top open at the top.

At that point, Maki appears and asks what he’s doing. She assumes that he’s been two-timing on her with Ichika, and tells him she never wants to see him again. Ryou gets angry and grabs Maki, announcing that they’re in the middle of nowhere and that even if they yelled no one would come and help them anyway. Ichika runs away into the bushes with Manatsu. Saya appears again and makes a philosophical mark about the light of the moon highlighting the wikedness of the human heart, but it not being the fault of the moon. Manatsu convinces Ichika to use the Djinn’s power.

The Djinn this time is the Moon. Nice costume, designed by Suezen (Shining Force II, Yadamon, Marine Colour). She sends out a bright light from herself, essentially glowing like the moon. This signals Kai, who is nearby. He appears and deals with Ryou. Ichika and Manatsu fly off, and Kai calls his brother. “I didn’t think it was possible, but…”

As Ichika and Manatsu fly home, they spot Ryou and Maki walking together. Ryou tells her what was actually going on - he thought she was angry at him, and wanted Ichika’s help to get Maki back. All’s well that ends well.

Overall a decent episode but weak in comparison with some of the other moments in the series.

AnimeYuki and Spork don’t have a single episode torrent for Episode 2. They have a batch for episodes 1-3, a version two which apparently had a better subtitle job.
