The series is slowly improving in both animation and overall quality. This is a good thing. Also, it still follows the manga reasonably closely. This is also a good thing.
I liked this episode. Like the one before it, it followed the manga quite closely. Interestingly the ecchi level is increasing with each episode. Hopefully this means we’ll be getting bewbs by the end. hurr.
Episode four covers chapters 3-4 of the manga. These are the ‘Baka Rangers’ and ‘Asuna’s Balloon Boobs’ chapters, for those that have read the manga. The… ahem… ‘thermal expansion’ bit was incredibly funny when animated.
They swapped the two chapters around, interestingly, dropping a short shower scene with Asuna in order to get much better continuity between the two. If you hadn’t read the manga you would not pick that they’d spliced two stories together like they did.
Speaking of manga chapters, I did a quick analysis of the upcoming chapters of the manga. Next ep should be the dodgeball chapter, I expect that they should get through the whole of the match in a single episode, which will be three manga chapters and put us into volume 2.
Episode 6 therefore should be the beginning of Library Island. That arc in the manga takes four chapters (7-11) and I’d expect it will take them three episodes, taking us to episode 9. After that, it’s filler introducing some of the characters - Chisame, Fuka and Fumika, Ayaka and Konoka. I wouldn’t expect they’ll skip anything here, so I’m thinking two chapters per episode. That takes us to ep 11.
Chapter 16 of the manga is the beginning of volume 3, and thus where the manga goes from average to really good. Evangeline. I’d say her arc will probably span 5 or so episodes. That means they’ll have time to go to Kyoto and spend somewhere around 10 episodes there. It’ll probably end at that point, sadly. I was hoping they’d go further but I don’t think they will unless this is a 52-episode series and no one knows.
Downside is this means Setsuna, my personal favourite character, won’t be doing much in the anime until around episode 17.
