October 2007 Anime

I ended up not doing one of these posts last season because there really didn’t seem to be much that I intended to watch. Although in actual fact, there’s at least four that I’m following. Anyway, most of the stuff I knew I’d want to be following started in the Spring season (April ‘07). Anyway, this is once again a list of the shows I’m reasonably interested in and will likely be following for the Autumn season (October ‘07). Like my last entries like this, this is not intended to be an exhaustive list of everything that’s going to be running. For that you can check moonphase. These are instead shows that have managed to interest me somewhat. Also if you look at the stuff I’ve been interested in in previous attempts, you’ll notice I always end up picking a few utter stinkers. :( Such is life. (Note to self: stop watching so much anime)

#### ef - a tale of memories

ef - a tale of memories

Okay, right off the bat: this looks to be generic, crappy eroge-cum-anime stuff. However, I will be watching the shit out of it. Why? Tenmon is composing the music, and the background art appears to be by Makoto Shinkai. Shinkai is one of a select few people on the “men Negs would turn for” list, and Tenmon is an awesome composer. There was a preview DVD released quite recently and conclave have subbed it. (site)

#### Ghost Hound

Ghost Hound

This one nearly slipped under my radar owing to the fact that the art is kind of bland looking. It shouldn’t, because it has a pedigree that suggests it is definitely going to be worth a look. Appears to be a horror show, and it’ll probably go largely unsubbed as it seems to have complicated dialogue, owing mainly to the fact that Masamune Shirow is writing. Additionally, the director’s credentials include Serial Experiments Lain and Kino’s Journey. Definitely giving it a look. (site)

#### Genshiken Season 2

Genshiken 2

Fucking *finally*. This is the show we should have gotten back when they originally announced it before it morphed into that godawful abomination Kujibiki Unbalance. KU was so bad that they basically had to add real Genshiken episodes to the DVDs to make people buy them. I totally don’t know what the Japanese execs were thinking. Anyway, if you watched Genshiken then you know this will be great. If you didn’t, you are *dead to me* until you do so. (site)

#### Clannad

CLANNAD

Kyoto Animation have so far had an extremely good track record when it comes to adaptions of existing properties, though I wish they’d only done 13 episodes of Lucky Star (it’s started to grate). As the third leg of the Key tripod (Kanon, Air, Clannad) I’ll be quite interested to see how this turns out. Actually it’s technically a… quintopod? now since Key have done Clannad sequel Tomoyo After and have their brand new game Little Busters as well. I’m interested to see if they continue the Key game adaptions past here. It’s not fair to call this an eroge adaption either, since it’s actually completely clean. (site)

#### Prism Ark

Prism Ark

This season is eroge-adaption season. Like every season. Except this time there’s actually stuff worth watching. Prism Ark has its genesis as a Ero-SRPG. It seemed to have a halfway decent story, though. The game also featured Halko Momoi, so I hope the anime follows suit. It would be great if they also recycled the game’s OP as it’s Kotoko, but Kotoko from back in the I’ve Sound era when she wasn’t just churning out boring generic j-pop. Additionally I find the character designs extremely appealing. Besides, it’s not as if there’s no precedent for this sort of adaption being enjoyable. See also: Utawarerumono. (site)

#### Kimikiss Pure Rouge

Kimikiss Pure Rouge

God, another one. I never bothered playing the game, but the character designs are once again extremely appealing. As long as the characters manage to collect a braincell between them (unlike School Days, for example, which contains the most intellectually bankrupt characters of the year) this could be watchable. Not expecting much though. (site)

#### Sketch Book ~Full Colors~

Sketch Book ~Full Colors~

I had no idea that this even existed before a day or two ago, but now that I know about it, I’ll be on it like a fat kid on chocolate cake. Essentially it’s the latest show from the team that did Aria. Expecting another relaxing, breezy and uplifting series from this. (site)

#### Shakugan no Shana II

Shakugan no Shana

The first season was an amusing diversion, though it fell extremely short of being anything above mediocre, due mainly to heavy-handed plot setting, incredibly annoying and poorly written love triangle involving one of the most irritating characters ever, and an ending that felt like a cop-out. Still, I’m a masochist or something because I’ll probably still watch it. You Can’t Say No To Noizi Ito. (site)

#### Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Gundam 00

Okay, we established a few days ago that both Nagi and I are pretty much over Gundam. However, I can’t forget that some of it is actually good. There had been rumors of a new Gundam directed by Seiji Mizushima of Full Metal Alchemist fame for a while, and given how good FMA turned out I was reasonably interested. Then they announced it officially. There are aspects of this which seem to have a heck of a lot of potential. There are other aspects which sound awful, though, like the retarded names of the latest Gundam crop, and the fact that it seems to be attempting to do Gundam Wing over again and hook the Squealing Yaoi Fangirl demographic. I’m still willing to give it the benefit of the doubt at this point though and at least give it a look. (site)

#### You’re Under Arrest! Full Throttle

You're Under Arrest! Full Throttle

I know nothing about this other than that it’s happening, and it’s a sequel to the second season. I’ll definitely be watching this, because I absolutely fucking love this franchise and always wished there was more. The only downside is that they’re using Fujishima’s more recent character design style, like they did with Ah! My Goddess, and I really don’t like his newer art as much. (site)

#### Night Wizard

Night Wizard

Night Wizard is actually originally a classic pen & paper RPG. It’s your standard swords and sorcery stuff, but played out in a modern urban environment. That’s pretty much all I know, but it has interesting looking art and the description of the setting reminds me a little of Type-Moon’s stuff, among others. Worth a look at least. (site)

#### Blue Drop

Blue Drop

I know nothing about this, but those in the know have described it to me as Space Yuri. I am all for that (yuri, that is) so I’ll be watching. It’s actually been a while since we had any at all - not counting Marimite, which while excellent is not a full TV series, I think the last good one was Simoun. I’m not completely sold on this though, as Gonzo is involved and they have the remarkable ability to suck the very soul out of everything they produce and make it feel like it came off an assembly line from some evil factory of broken dreams. (site)

In related news, still no sign of a second season of Berserk. I’ll keep the flame alive for you, Gutts. T_T

Geez, that’s like half of the shows coming out.

  2. 2 NegativeZero

It is, but pretty much everything I’m watching is set to finish in September as far as I know so I’ll need replacements.

Also I expect a few of these to fail to perform according to expectations. Chances are that I won’t end up following Kimikiss, and Gundam 00 will probably suck :(

Clannad Prism Ark Genshiken and Shana.
I’ll prolly only have time to watch a few, and these are definitely gonna be it.
