Air - First Impressions

Air is a well-known Hentai game from Key, who are best known for producing Kanon, which should be quite well-known to a lot of people, especially if you read Megatokyo. It was adapted into a movie last year which did quite well, and now that movie’s success has sparked a TV series.

Normally this is not the sort of stuff I watch. I don’t mind romance stuff or anything, but often this sort of thing is a little too tedious to watch on its own. However, I managed to last a whole episode here, so it might end up being one I follow.

What instantly struck me here was that the animation is of a consistently high standard. This does not look like a TV anime at all, it looks like an OAV. Recently a lot of people have been bitching about cel counts in anime getting lower and lower as more creative ways to use still shots and recycled footage are being employed. Again, this is not the case, Air has a lot of movement and animation which would indicate a high cel count.

The character designs are something you’ll either like or hate. If you liked Kanon’s designs, you’ll like Air’s. I didn’t really like them, they have odd eyes that just don’t strike me right.

In the end, not a bad looking series, one worth looking into if you enjoyed stuff like To Heart, Kanon, or Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. I’ll probably follow this, but if it gets boring I doubt I’ll continue too far.
